What Is OSRS TCG? The Card-Collecting Mode Taking Over Old School RuneScape

OSRS TCG turns your everyday Old School RuneScape grind into a collectible card game. Skill, kill monsters, earn credits, rip packs — here's what the mode is and why players can't put it down.

OSRS TCG is a lightweight collectible card game bolted onto Old School RuneScape. It runs as a RuneLite plugin, so you play the exact game you already know — you just earn a second currency while you do it: credits. Spend those credits on booster packs, and every pack showers you with cards drawn from the items, monsters and gear of Gielinor.

The pitch is simple, and it's why the mode spread like wildfire on launch weekend:

I love this agilityman mode with extra features.

You're not playing a separate minigame buried in a menu. You're playing RuneScape — training Agility, kicking giant rats, chopping trees, killing crabs — and the plugin quietly rewards all of it with credits you turn into cards.

The core loop

  1. 1Do stuff in OSRS. Gain non-combat XP, kill monsters, and level up.
  2. 2Earn credits automatically for that activity.
  3. 3Buy a Standard Pack for 2,500 credits.
  4. 4Rip the pack — flip the cards one by one, chasing rarities and foils.
  5. 5Grow your collection, complete sets, and trade duplicates with other players.
  6. 6Repeat forever. (This is the part players warn you about.)

This mode hits harder than crack in the 80s.

Cards are made of RuneScape

Every card in the game is a real OSRS item or monster, pulled straight from the OSRS Wiki. A card can be anything from a humble potato to a 3rd age longsword to General Graardor. Rarer, higher-value and higher-level things are harder to pull — and every card also has a shiny foil variant that collectors chase hard.

From a 1 gp potato to a boss to a foil 3rd age longsword — every card is a real piece of RuneScape.

Cards span seven rarity tiers, from Common all the way up to the ultra-rare Godly. Pulling a Godly, or a foil of something big, is a genuine event — the kind of thing people leap out of their chairs for.

"Cardcore" — the self-imposed challenge

Beyond just collecting, the community turned OSRS TCG into a full-blown challenge-account style nicknamed "cardcore." The unofficial house rules go something like this:

  • You can only use an item once you've pulled its card. You can gather raw materials, but you can't cook that fish, wield that scimitar or light that fire until the card unlocks it.
  • Trade duplicates only. Most players consider selling non-duplicate cards for packs to be cheating. "No trade, we all irons" is a common creed.
  • Progression becomes a puzzle: you're constantly working around what you haven't unlocked yet — cutting cactus with a knife because you have no axe card, or hunting for a lit fire because you have logs but no tinderbox.

You ever just wander around like a hobo looking for a lit fire.

This constraint is what makes the mode addictive. Every unlock feels earned, and the early game becomes a genuinely fresh RuneScape experience — even for 20-year veterans.

I've played this game for 23 years and I haven't heard of 70% of these.
