Training the CardMan Way: Niche Methods for When You Don't Have the Card
Specimen trays, cactus slashing, Blast Furnace pumping and 8-hour flinches — the community's niche training methods for levelling every skill when the card you need refuses to drop.
By OSRS Card Exchange Team · · 6 min read
CardMan Mode's defining puzzle isn't killing a boss — it's answering "how do I train this skill when I don't own a single card for it?" Over launch week the community solved that puzzle for nearly every skill, and the answers are gloriously unhinged: bribing a guide with tea, slashing cacti with a ceremonial banner, and kicking 1,200 bunnies. This is the collected playbook.
The pump: Strength's answer to everything
The Blast Furnace pump is the mode's Strength meta: ~10–12k XP/hour, nearly AFK, and it needs no card at all — just 30 Strength and starting The Giant Dwarf (walk to Keldagrim via the Rellekka cave; the ferryman has no card). The community lives on worlds 302/303, where someone is usually keeping the coke stoked.
- A RuneLite logout-timer extension makes it a 30-minute AFK; re-click the pump after ~100 minutes.
- Pumping counts as combat, so it pays no XP-credits — it's for levels, not packs.
- If someone smelts on your world you get free Smithing XP drops on top.
- Crowded pump invisible? "Too many people, just spam where it should be."
- Shovelling coke instead gives 5 Firemaking XP a scoop — but needs 30 Firemaking.
Pump daddy is 12k xp/h.
Getting to 30 Strength with your fists
The pump's entry fee is the mode's great equaliser: with no weapon card, you kick whatever low-level card you did pull — rats, cows, gnomes, bunnies, farmers, roosters. One player killed 1,200 bunnies; another put 500 drunk men in the ground. Physics tip from the theorycrafters: kicking is a 4-tick attack, so any 4-tick weapon with a Strength bonus beats it — and anything slower (looking at you, iron warhammer) loses to your own foot.
That's a meme if I haven't heard of any. Kicking gnomes for 30 str.
Flinching: the universal combat tech
Flinching at a monster's wander range (hit, step out, wait, repeat) is how card-locked accounts fight above their weight and farm specific weapon drops with zero food. The famous grinds: Zamorak warriors for the rune scimitar (3–8 hours reported), fire giants on the Isle of Souls, black knights for the 1/128 steel mace (verdict: not worth it), and possessed pickaxes for an adamant pick.
Only took like 8 hours flinching. With iron scim.
Mining & Fishing from absolutely nothing
- Digsite specimen tray — 0.5 XP a search, zero requirements, no card, no quest. About an hour from 1–6 Mining, which is enough to swing that steel pickaxe you pulled early.
- Digsite panning — the Cup of tea card bribes the panning guide, and each pan gives Mining and Fishing XP (~1.3k/hr). One junk consumable, two skills.
- The 1-bait ground spawn — one player reached 20 Fishing by picking up a single fishing bait spawn 160 times. That's the mode in one sentence.
- Level-1 big net fishing at Civitas — the Big fishing net works at the old Leagues spot: 7.5 XP a catch, mostly old boots, fully AFK. "Very character building."

Resource • Consumable
A nice cup of tea.

Resource
Useful for catching lots of fish.

Resource • Weapon
A deadly throwing dart with an iron tip.
Woodcutting without an axe: cactus season
Cacti aren't cards and don't need an axe — any slash weapon or a knife cuts the Al Kharid / Ruins of Unkah cactus. Take the free Tempoross ferry from Al Kharid (no Shantay pass, no Coins needed), world-hop the spawns, and grind out 1–6 for your steel axe at ~1.2k XP/hour. The rates are comedy (10 XP at a 12% success rate at level 1) but it is the only door in. One player confirmed the clan vexillum counts as a slash weapon, which is the most OSRS sentence ever written.
Whoever suggested hopping for cactus ily.
Smithing at level 1: fix things with a hammer
Motherlode Mine repairs are the level-1 Smithing method: fixing wheels and struts pays 1.5× your Smithing level per fix with no level requirement — just the Hammer card (and a pickaxe card to get in). Find a busy world where other people's wheels keep breaking. Rockfalls are 10 XP, 1-tick, with any pickaxe; and only the Pay-dirt card is needed to actually mine — nuggets can be banked for later.
Firemaking without a tinderbox
- Achey logs have no card — players are taking 1–50 Firemaking on them alone.
- Forestry-world campfires and permanent fires — the Rogues' Den fire by Grace (left of the chest, not right) and Rantz's cave are the classics; forestry-fire XP is confirmed equal to normal.
- Borrow a stranger's fire — clanmates literally light fires for the tinderbox-less. Community service, cardman style.
- Barbarian firemaking with a bow at 55 — "actually using the barbarian stuff" for the first time in 20 years.
The Thieving ladder & the HAM gear fountain
Thieving is a free skill, and its ladder is the mode's money spine: Hazeel Cult (1–11) → cake stalls → fruit stalls at 25 → push to 50 → wealthy citizens in Varlamore (~60k/hr nearly AFK, and they print easy clues). Stalls aren't cards, so they're fair game under the standard ruleset — bank the loot until you pull it.
And then there's the mode's best-kept open secret: H.A.M. members have no pickpocket card. They're free to thieve from level 1 and their loot table is a gear fountain — steel pickaxes, steel axes, steel arrows, iron axes, buttons for Crafting and clue scrolls. (The Bronzeman plugin blocks HAM thieving by default; turning that setting off is the accepted move.) Without the Coins or Coin pouch cards, the coin pouches themselves get destroyed — painful, but the rules are the rules.
Ham members also give up to steel pick and axe for whoever needs.
Small cards, huge value
- Imp — one card, triple value: combat XP, all four beads for Imp Catcher (beads aren't cards), and the amulet of accuracy — a card-free early-BiS amulet. Bead dry streaks are clan sport.
- Brutus + Bull bones — the early-boss economy: ~30 credits a kill, 40 Prayer XP a bone, and the Mooleta offhand drop. The Cowbell card rings him back in ~5 seconds; the alternative is a keybound world-hop with the warning turned off.
- Gemstone Crab — the "retire from the pump" card: ~18k XP/hour, fully AFK, quoted at 1/6,000 to pull.
- Iron dart — unlocks Ranged with no Tourist Trap. World-hop the 4x spawn outside Civitas, collect 200–300, and throw them at your lowest-defence unlocked mob.
Getting places without Coins
Half of training is reaching the trainer. The coinless travel book: walk around the Al Kharid gate via the northern opening; take the free Tempoross ferry into the desert; sail to Kourend free with Veos; reach Aldarin by Civitas charter or quetzal instead of the 20gp boat; and abuse minigame teleports (Blast Furnace once Giant Dwarf is started, LMS as a free hub). The wilderness lever to Ardougne works too — but a hardcore-hunting PKer camps it on the card worlds, so hop immediately or take the long way.
Lever is natural selection at this point.
Bottom line
CardMan training is a mindset: the card gates the item, not the activity — so find the activity with no item. Specimen trays, cacti, panning, repairs, fists, flinches and other people's fires will carry any account to the point where its real cards take over. And when a pull finally lands the method you actually wanted, the 160 pieces of fishing bait will have been worth it.
The mainstream methods
Agility, the Thieving ladder, Wintertodt and the credit engines.
Frequently asked
- How do you train skills in CardMan Mode without the right cards?
- Find activities that need no item: the Digsite specimen tray for Mining (zero requirements), cactus slashing for Woodcutting (any slash weapon), Motherlode Mine repairs for level-1 Smithing (hammer only), achey logs and permanent fires for Firemaking without a tinderbox, and the Blast Furnace pump for AFK Strength.
- What is the Blast Furnace pump method in OSRS TCG?
- Operating the Blast Furnace pump gives ~10–12k Strength XP/hour nearly AFK with no card required — you need 30 Strength and to have started The Giant Dwarf. The community pumps on worlds 302/303 where the coke is kept stoked. It counts as combat, so it pays levels rather than XP credits.
- How do you train Ranged in CardMan Mode without Tourist Trap?
- The Iron dart card unlocks Ranged with no quest. Iron darts have a 4x ground spawn outside Civitas ila Fortis — world-hop it to collect a few hundred, then throw them at low-defence monsters you have unlocked.
- Why do CardMan players pickpocket H.A.M. members?
- H.A.M. members have no pickpocket card, so they're free to thieve from level 1 — and they drop steel pickaxes, steel axes, steel arrows, buttons and clue scrolls, making them the mode's best card-free gear source. Coin pouches must be destroyed until you own the Coins or Coin pouch card.
