How to Start Thieving in OSRS TCG: The Full Credit Ladder
Thieving is the backbone skill of OSRS TCG — steady credits, AFK-friendly, no expensive unlocks. Here's the community's proven ladder from your first pickpocket to AFK wealthy citizens in Varlamore.

If skilling is the backbone of OSRS TCG, Thieving is the backbone of skilling. It's cheap to start, needs no gathered materials, converts straight into credits, and tops out as one of the most AFK credit engines in the game. The community pivots into Thieving almost immediately — here's the exact ladder they use.
Why Thieving first?
- No unlock tax. Unlike Fletching (needs a knife card and a logs card) or Firemaking (needs a tinderbox), you can pickpocket with nothing but your hands.
- Steady, AFK-friendly XP = steady, AFK-friendly credits.
- It scales. The same skill that gets you started ends up a top-tier late-game earner.
The start of the game is literally agil, attack, thieve and a couple of quests.
The Thieving ladder
Level 1–11: Get off the ground
Two options, and the community recommends doing both:
- Do the Hazeel Cult quest → instant 11 Thieving, no cards required. The fastest jump.
- Pickpocket "the guns" — the men/HAM-style NPCs near the Ardougne clocktower. Players report 1 → 5 in about four minutes. The NPC in front of the Tower of Life also works with no card.
Level 5–25: Cake stalls
Head to the cake stalls in East Ardougne. (Access needs Children of the Sun completed, or use the Hazeel Cult route above to skip ahead.) Cheap, safe, fast early XP.
Level 25–50: Fruit stalls (Hosidius / Zeah)
The workhorse mid-game step everyone names. Fruit stalls in Hosidius carry you from 25 to 50, and as a bonus they hand you papaya — free food for your combat training. A minority grinds CoX stone chests / artefacts here instead, but fruit stalls are the consensus.
Fruit stalls to 50 for sure.

Level 50+: Wealthy citizens in Varlamore — the AFK meta
Once you hit 50, graduate to Wealthy Citizens in Varlamore — the community's favourite "barely-clicking" credit farm:
One click per 90 seconds.
AFK wealthy citizen tech, 55k xp an hour making some cash.
Players report roughly 55k–65k XP/hour AFK, scaling toward 90k–130k/hour if you world-hop (the rate drops on a second world in quick succession, so hopping resets it). About as hands-off as skilling gets while still pumping credits.
Handy Thieving milestones & tricks
- 61 Thieving unlocks the black scimitar spawn in Ardougne — a common goal to grab a real weapon and stop getting kicked off stalls.
- The Bazaar in Varlamore: trap two guards so you can stall/pickpocket safely without being caught in the open.
- Stealing Artefacts is an option (~110–130k/hr reported) but involves "a lotta walking."
- CoX chests are viable even without a lockpick card if you want variety.
- No Varlamore access yet? Some rulesets require the guard card to mark guards during Children of the Sun; check your group's ruleset. No-card fallbacks include pickpocketing HAM members or thieving at CoX to 50.

The one-line summary
Hazeel Cult (→11) → cake stalls (→25) → fruit stalls in Hosidius (→50) → AFK wealthy citizens in Varlamore. Cheap to start, steady credits the whole way, and it ends as one of the best AFK earners in OSRS TCG.
Pair it with combat
Kill credits, flinching, Brutus and AFK crabs.
Frequently asked
