Before you can take part

  • RequiresCombatNo gate, but a combat level of at least 81 is recommended so the wandering Loar Shades don't single you out while you build and cremate.
  • RequiresShades of Mort'tonRequired to unlock the minigame itself.

How it works

The loop has three parts: repair and defend the temple to raise Sanctity (which lets you sanctify oil and brew serum), kill shades around town and in the catacombs for their remains, then cremate those remains as pyre logs to earn keys that unlock the catacombs' chests.

Building and defending the temple

A hammer is the one tool the building phase can't do without. A Flamtaer bag and bracelet aren't required but are the standard quality-of-life upgrades — the bag holds far more building supplies, and the bracelet speeds up building and Sanctity gain considerably.

  • Any ofA hammer

Any of the three works; the Flamtaer hammer is significantly faster at building.

  • OptionalFlamtaer bag

Holds up to 60 timber beams, 60 limestone bricks and 500 swamp paste — saves constant trips for inventory space.

  • OptionalFlamtaer bracelet

Speeds up building actions and significantly increases the rate Sanctity is gained.

  • Any ofMaterials to repair the temple(optional)

Different breaks in the temple call for different materials — stonework needs limestone bricks and a chisel, woodwork needs planks, cracks need swamp paste. Bought locally rather than brought from home.

The shades and afflicted around Mort'ton

Loar Shades wander the town and temple by default; the rest of the shade types are found in the Shade Catacombs, behind doors that need keys to open. None of these are a specific required kill — you fight whichever you have access to.

  • Any ofLoar Shades wandering the town(optional)

Accessible from the start, no keys needed. Aggressive toward lower combat levels.

  • Any ofShades in the Shade Catacombs(optional)

Behind keyed doors north-west of town — the higher the key tier, the deeper you can go.

  • OptionalAfflicted

Not fought — cured with a serum for coins and small gifts. Wanders the town during the building phase.

Cremating shade remains for keys

A shade's remains only burn on the pyre log matching its type, and cremating them is what actually produces a key or a stack of coins. A tinderbox is the one tool this step needs.

Unlocking the catacombs' chests

Cremating shades pays out keys in five tool tiers (bronze through gold) across five colours matched to the shade type. Higher tiers open lower-tier doors too, and the colour of the key changes the odds of what the chest yields.

What the chests pay out

Chests hold coins plus one main reward: runes, armour pieces, clue scrolls, or one of the catacombs' rarer uniques. A broken coffin from Dampe, repaired with locks found in the same chests, is a permanent way to carry shade remains around.

Shades of Mort'ton — frequently asked

What is the minimum you need for Shades of Mort'ton?
No specific items — just Combat. The loop has three parts: repair and defend the temple to raise Sanctity (which lets you sanctify oil and brew serum), kill shades around town and in the catacombs for their remains, then cremate those remains as pyre logs to earn keys that unlock the catacombs' chests.
Do you need a quest for Shades of Mort'ton?
Shades of Mort'ton is required. Required to unlock the minigame itself. It is members-only.
Which OSRS TCG cards are tied to Shades of Mort'ton?
Every item on this page that exists in the catalogue is linked to its card, grouped by what it is for. Cards are pulled from packs in the OSRS TCG RuneLite plugin, and you can trade for the ones you are missing on OSRS Card Exchange.
Is there an OSRS TCG card for Shades of Mort'ton itself?
No. The OSRS TCG has cards for Old School RuneScape's items and monsters, not for its minigames — so there is no "Shades of Mort'ton" card. What this page maps is the other way round: the items Shades of Mort'ton asks you to bring, each one linked to the card that depicts it.
