Walkthrough overview

Unequip any Saradomin or Guthix items (Zamorakian items are fine) — the Mage of Zamorak will not speak to you while you wear rival god gear. Putting them in your inventory is enough.

Talk to the Mage of Zamorak to begin. He asks you to take magical readings from the rune essence altars so the institute can locate the essence mines.

Follow his directions to gather the readings, then report back to complete the miniquest and unlock access to the Abyss and the abyssal rift for rune-running.
