The Foil Rules Forum Is Open: One Place for the Community's Favourite Argument
Foil talk was 7% of everything said in the community chat last night. The new Foil Rules forum gives every ruling, house rule and hall-of-shame pull a permanent home — here's the state of play going in.

Ask the clan chat what a foil unlocks and you'll get a ruling, a counter-ruling, a joke answer and at least one person typing "what do foils do" purely to watch the world burn. Last night, foil talk was 424 messages — about one in every thirteen things said — from 206 different players. The debate has outgrown a scrolling chat window, so we've given it a home: the Foil Rules forum is now open.
One evening of foil talk, by the numbers
- messages mentioning foils in one evening
- 424
- players who weighed in on a ruling
- 206
- foil chance per card, by default
- 1%
- the community clan's member cap — now hit
- 500
It wasn't all civil. The chat has split, half-jokingly, into "foilers" and "non-foilers" — players who run foil unlocks versus purists who treat a foil as just a shiny copy — and the teasing now runs both ways hard enough that one player proposed separate foil and non-foil chats "so we don't have to do this every 5 minutes." At least two of the loudest anti-foil voices were later caught happily using foil unlocks themselves, which tells you how much of the war is theatre.
Foils are up for the discretion of the receiver. Hope this helps.
The framework, as the community runs it today
Underneath the noise, the written ruleset (posted by the mode's leading creators and now cited by name whenever the question comes up) is still the reference standard, and it has picked up real refinements:
- 1Tiered items unlock downward. A foil unlocks the same family below its tier — all clean herbs under a foil Lantadyme, all ores beneath a foil Adamantite ore, all bones below foil Babydragon bones on the wiki's remains page.
- 2Boss and monster foils unlock the collection log — the boss's uniques, not its whole drop table. Chat now calls this "the common theme."
- 3Set pieces unlock the set. The horizontal school won several threads last night: foil Eclipse moon tassets ruled full eclipse set, foil Dharok's platelegs full Dharok's, and a foil equipment crate its full contents.
- 4Quest NPCs unlock their quest — but not its prerequisites. A foil quest character grants the quest it belongs to and nothing upstream.
- 5Tier caps are the new moderating force. Several players now cap vertical unlocks — "1–2 tiers below and that's it," or "'everything under' only works up to dragon" — as a middle lane between vertical and purist.
Foil elemental = all elementals, foil cata = all cata.
The general logic: what kind of card is your foil?
Boil a week of case law down and the answer almost always follows the kind of card, not the card itself. This is the quick reference the chat keeps re-deriving from scratch:
| If your foil is… | The emerging rule | Grounded in |
|---|---|---|
| A tiered item (weapon, tool, rune, ore, herb, bone) | Everything in the same family below its tier | Crystal pickaxe → every pickaxe below; lantadyme → clean herbs below; babydragon bones → down the remains page |
| A piece of a gear set | The full set — the horizontal school's territory | Eclipse moon tassets → full eclipse; Dharok's platelegs → full Dharok's; HAM gloves → the full HAM set |
| A boss or monster | Its collection-log uniques (plus weaker same-type monsters) — never the whole drop table | "Foil boss = collection log for boss" — the chat's own summary |
| A quest character | That quest — never its prerequisites | Foil Dr Harlow → Vampyre Slayer; a foil Seren → Song of the Elves, not the prereq chain |
| A minigame reward | The reward line it came from | Rogue's equipment crate → full rogue gear; a foil prospector chest → the full prospector set |
| A pack or container | Its contents — but only when the pack itself is the foil | The rune-pack ruling: a normal pack card never unlocks the rune |
| A potion or consumable | Its recipe — the component parts, never the whole class | Goading and stamina potions both ruled components-only |
| A tierless oddball | Sideways to something sensibly related — or nothing at all | Mystic jewel → flash powder; bronze sq shield → the hall of shame |
None of this is enforced — every row is a convention some players run and others reject, which is exactly why each category deserves its own thread on the Foil Rules forum where the edge cases can pile up under one roof.
Last night's rulings, as argued
These are the live verdicts from one evening of chat — the raw material the new forum exists to turn into settled case law:
| Foil | Ruling | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Water rune | Elemental runes below it — the owner self-nerfed "all elementals" down to just air | Self-nerf, respected |
| Mud rune | Water + earth runes; broader camp says all combination runes | Leading answer |
| Rune pack | A pack card does not unlock the rune — unless the pack itself is the foil | Consensus |
| Armadyl chainskirt | Everything below the skirt vs Kree'arra's collection log | The night's big debate |
| Babydragon bones | All bones below it on the remains page | Agreed |
| Eclipse moon tassets | The full eclipse set — "what is 'under' eclipse?" | Set rule won |
| Dharok's platelegs | Full Dharok's set | Set rule |
| Rogue's equipment crate | Its contents — full rogue gear (precedent: a foil prospector chest) | Lean yes |
| Lantadyme | Every clean herb below lantadyme | Consensus |
| Goading potion | Its component parts — never all potions | Agreed |
| Vesta's longsword | All Vesta's items; one camp says all Bounty Hunter items | Owner adopted |
| Dr Harlow | Unlocks Vampyre Slayer — the quest, not its prerequisites | Refined live |
| Bronze sq shield | "Guess I'll just jump off a bridge" | Hall of shame |
| Any confusing foil | "It unlocks the GE" | The running joke |

The house-brews
Around the core framework, players keep inventing whole systems of their own — and this is exactly the material the new forum wants written down as proper threads:
- Permalock until traded: foils stay locked until you trade another player for a different foil — a rule that only works because trading exists.
- Reverse TCG: start with everything unlocked; every card you pull locks its item — and every foil lets you block out one card. Pitched last night, immediately endorsed as "I'd watch that."
- Foil-only accounts: regular cards do nothing, only foils unlock — one player runs exactly this on a UIM.
- Foil = the recipe: a foil potion unlocks its component parts, extended by some into "a card lets you use it, a foil lets you make it."
- Foils as a bankroll: one player's foils each grant 2,500 credits — a free pack per shiny — instead of unlocks.
- The confessional: "I have the most OP foil rule and I have no shame — I'm bronzeman and I can buy foils without getting them first." Declared openly, which is the one rule everyone actually agrees on.
Meanwhile, in the rest of the chat
For colour, the same logs show what the community was up to around the foil war:
- The community clan hit its 500-member cap about three days after opening.
- A god pack landed — "2 purple 3 red in 1 opening" — alongside a foil crystal pickaxe, a foil 3rd age axe and one player pulling both spirit shield sigils in foil.
- The coins card class divide rages on: "coin havers" versus the "brokies," with one player 1,230 packs deep and still coinless.
- Hardcore-style runs keep ending in style — the Ardougne lever remains the community's grim reaper, and one player "died to a buffalo, we don't talk about it."
- The weapon drought produced the iron mace gang and a player 260 packs in, still punching — including our beloved cow boss Brutus, whose kill counts you can compare on the Brutus board.
- Early-game tech of the day: panning for mining and fishing XP with nothing but a cup of tea — "an easy 20 packs in like an hour."
Why a forum, and why now
Because the community asked for it, almost word for word. "Would you guys be interested in community foil rules, based off chats in here — listed in the website?" — "I want official foil rules so people stop asking about their foils." A chat message scrolls away in seconds and the same five questions come back every hour; a forum thread accumulates the argument, the counter-examples and the verdict, and stays linkable forever. Others pushed back that "setting your own foil rules is part of the fun" — and they're right too, which is why the forum is for collecting and comparing rulings, not enforcing them.
Post the ruling you run, attach the exact cards it covers (a thread can carry up to three card faces, foils rendered in full shine), and let the community argue it properly — with a record at the end. The rulings table above is the seed; the forum is where it grows.
Take your foil ruling to the Foil Rules forum
Propose it, defend it, or file your useless foil in the hall of shame — this is the permanent home for all of it.
Frequently asked
- What is the Foil Rules forum in OSRS TCG?
- A new sub-forum on the OSRS TCG Card Exchange for everything about foil cards and the house rules built around them: what a foil unlocks in CardMan Mode, set-completion and trading conventions, tier caps and self-nerfs. Threads can attach the exact cards under discussion, so a ruling is argued against the real card.
- What foil rules does the OSRS TCG community currently use?
- The logic follows the kind of card: tiered items unlock their family below (tier-down), gear-set pieces unlock the full set, boss and monster foils grant the collection log, quest characters unlock their quest but not its prerequisites, minigame rewards unlock their reward line, and consumables unlock their recipe. A purist minority runs no foil rules at all, and moderates cap unlocks one or two tiers down. None of it is official — every ruling is a house rule.
- Are foil rules official in OSRS TCG?
- No. The mode is community-made and honour-based, so foil rulings are conventions, not mechanics — the most-cited reference is a ruleset posted by the mode's leading creators. The Foil Rules forum exists to collect and compare those rulings in one place, not to enforce one.
- How rare is a foil card in OSRS TCG?
- Each card in a pack has a 1% chance to be foil by default — the plugin lets players retune that rate before opening packs, which is why community rules usually assume the default odds when judging how strong a foil unlock should be.
