What Game Modes Is the Community Creating for OSRS TCG?
Cardcore hardcores, UIM 'sadism', chunk-locked cards, Coinman Mode and the lamp-hoarding lose condition — the game modes players are inventing on top of CardMan Mode, and the rule debates shaping them.
By OSRS Card Exchange Team · · 4 min read
CardMan Mode is itself a player-invented game mode — so of course the community immediately started inventing game modes on top of it. A week in, the chats are full of hardcores dying to rooftops, UIMs describing their choices as "sadism", and one player whose entire account loses if they collect 28 lamps. Here's the taxonomy of what people are actually playing.
The base layer: CardMan Mode
The foundation everyone shares: your card collection decides what you're allowed to use. Combat needs the monster's card, gear needs the item's card, and skilling is gated by tools and inputs. On top of that sit two interaction tiers — the normal ruleset (gather and bank what you haven't unlocked) and the extreme one (don't touch it at all) — detailed in Trading, Collecting & Rules. "Cardman Mode" is the official name on this site; the community also says cardman, card-locked and — for the hardcore variant — cardcore.
You can literally make it as simple as you want it to be, but there's a general consensus in this clan chat and the streamer's rules.
Cardcore: the hardcore layer
The most popular remix by far: play CardMan on a hardcore ironman. It's also the funniest, because card-locked accounts die to things no other account dies to — Varrock rooftops, a web trap, a kited guard, wolves on the way to a cactus. The clan counted a dozen hardcore deaths in a single day and treats each one as shared entertainment rather than tragedy.
My hc tcg acc lost hc because i got trapped by web and died lol.
Who cares abt hc status... We keep going obv.
- Death spots with reputations: the wilderness lever (a PKer camps it on the card worlds), the Chaos Altar, Varrock rooftops, and Brutus — "actually #1 dangerous content."
- Pest Control is a confirmed safe death for regular hardcores — the community's designated practice room.
- The cursed workaround: "Just install Fake Iron Icon plugin and set yourself as hc" — proposed as a joke, mostly.
- One consolation from the chat: snowflake accounts may be more chill than hardcores here, since card-lock keeps you out of dangerous content for ages anyway.
The restriction stack
Beyond hardcore, players are stacking restrictions like transmog layers. All of these are real accounts mentioned in chat:
| Variant | The rule | Community verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Cardcore | CardMan + hardcore ironman | The default flex |
| TCG UIM | CardMan + ultimate ironman | "Sadism" — one player lasted 20 minutes |
| TCG GIM | A group ironman team under card rules | Co-op pack luck |
| Coinman Mode | Refuse the Coins card on principle | Contrarian pride |
| Coin-locked / card-locked HCIM | Both restrictions at once | Why |
| Tile-locked UIM | Card rules + a tile-man movement lock | Genuine madness |
| Chunk-locked TCG | Card rules inside map-chunk boundaries | Already exists |
| Foils-only UIM | Only foil pulls count as unlocks | "Completely sick" |
| Lamp-locked | XP from lamp cards only — "can I get inferno cape?" | No |
| The 28-lamp lose condition | Hoard every lamp; at 28 lamps (a full inventory), the account loses | Performance art |
| TCG DMM | Card rules on Deadman Mode | One known volunteer |
| Brutus-locked cardcore | All combat progression via Brutus | Moo |
Guys this is my new ironman but i can only get xp from lamps. Can I get inferno cape?
The invisible split: sellers, traders and pures
The deepest mode divide isn't hardcore-or-not — it's what you're allowed to do with your cards. The honour code says sell duplicates only; a sizeable faction sells pets and never-usable godlies anyway; content creators have been called out by name for selling freely. And foil rules (see How Should You Treat Foil Cards?) split the field again. The community's own proposed fix says it best:
Ya hiscores should be at least 3 categories (sellers, traders, "pures") imo.
"Pure" — no selling, no foil powers — is emerging as the prestige bracket, the closest thing CardMan has to a 1-defence pure. Until boards split, the practical rule is the one the community keeps repeating: play how you want, declare your rules, and compare yourself to people playing yours.
Not a single person is playing the same rn.
Where the modes live
- World 356 is the unofficial CardMan world (with all the PKer attention that brings), and the Cardcoreosrs clan recruits on world 402.
- The CardMan Mode highscores on this site rank collections — with a Brutus board, because the community demanded a Brutus board.
- The forums are where variant rules get defined and argued.
Will Jagex make it official?
The community thinks it's a matter of when. The mode appeared in a Jagex quarterly survey, and the chat's consensus is that a player-made mode this popular follows the ironman path eventually — "Jagex likes to take things player made and make it their own. It will happen." Predictions range from a Leagues-style temporary mode to a permanent game mode; plenty of players say they'd happily start over for an official version. Meanwhile the plugin side keeps maturing — a card-catalogue cleanup (holiday, Leagues and Deadman items out) is planned before a "full launch", with talk of a progress wipe still an open question.
I can't wait for this mode to be official. Idc if I have to start over lol.
The takeaway
A game mode invented by players is being forked by players, which is the most Old School thing imaginable. Whether you're a cardcore risking it all on a rooftop, a pure refusing foil powers, or the one person speedrunning a lamp-hoarding lose condition — declare your rules, find your bracket, and enjoy being on the ground floor of a mode that's still being written.

Frequently asked
- What is cardcore in OSRS?
- Cardcore is CardMan Mode played on a hardcore ironman: your card collection gates what you can use, and death demotes the account. It's the most popular community variant — and the deadliest, since card-locked accounts die to content no normal account fears.
- What variants of CardMan Mode exist?
- The community has invented cardcore (hardcore), TCG UIM and GIM, chunk-locked and tile-locked hybrids, Coinman Mode (refusing the Coins card), foils-only accounts, lamp-locked XP challenges and even a Deadman variant. All share the core rule that cards gate usage.
- Is CardMan Mode going to become an official Jagex game mode?
- Nothing is announced, but the mode appeared in a Jagex quarterly survey and the community widely expects official adoption eventually, either as a Leagues-style event or a permanent mode. Many players say they'd restart for an official version.
- What is a 'pure' in CardMan Mode?
- A player who takes no shortcuts the honour code debates: no selling non-duplicate cards and no foil unlock powers. The community has proposed splitting the highscores into sellers, traders and pures to make rankings comparable.
