Getting in
Volcanic Mine used to require Kudos and an unidentified small fossil to enter; both requirements have since been removed, so anyone can walk in. The one item involved isn't even something you bring.

Handed to you automatically on entry. Fill it with water to harden lava and cross the channels — 35 uses per game, 70 once you've bought the larger capacity with points.
Mining the boulder
The boulder in the lava channel is the whole point: mining it yields ore fragments (handed straight to Petrified Pete for Mining experience and reward points) plus a few resources you keep yourself.
